SAHD Recipe – Yum Sardine

Hey everyone! Welcome to another installment of SAHD recipes. Today, we’ll make Yum Sardine Thai style aka. Lockdown Sardine. Yum is a broad range of dishes in Thailand. Basically, you make a sweet, salty, spicy, and sour sauce, then add herbs and protein. My favorite is Beef Salad. But another really good one is Yum Sardine.

Canned sardine in tomato sauce is a great lockdown food. It has lots of omega 3, lycopene, cheap, and it’ll last over 2 years. You could just warm it up and eat it with rice or pasta. Or you could spice it up even more with my Yum Sardine recipe. I rarely make this dish because Mrs. RB40 doesn’t like it that much. She’s convinced you should eat sardine with crackers and that’s it. Well, we’re in lockdown so I made it anyway. Luckily, our son likes it and gave it 4 stars! That’s awesome. This can be his goto recipe in college. Heh heh.

Prep time: 5 minutes

Cook time: 2 minutes


  • Sardine in tomato sauce – This recipe is for the big can, usually 15 oz. I think they cost around $3 each at the grocery store.
  • 2 green onion – cut into small pieces
  • 1/2 bunch cilantro – cut into 1-inch pieces. You can remove most of the stems.
  • 1 shallot or half an onion – cut into slices.
  • Optional: 1/2 cup fresh mint – I got some from our garden.
  • Optional: 1 stalk lemongrass – I didn’t have any. Remove the bottom 1 inch and toss. Cut the next 4 inches as thinly as you can.


  • 2 tablespoon fish sauce
  • 1 lime
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • Optional: 4-5 fresh chili – minced.
  • Optional: chili powder or Siracha sauce.


  • A large bowl. This should be large enough to fit everything above and have room for mixing.

Make Yum Sardine

  • Mix the sugar, fish sauce, lime juice, and chili in a large bowl.
  • Add the sardine. (You could warm up the sardine if you’d like. I’m too lazy…)
  • Add the herbs – green onion, onion, mint, cilantro, and lemongrass.
  • Gently mix everything together. The fish will break up if you stir too hard. It’s okay to break a few pieces.

Enjoy Yum Sardine!

Serve with warm rice or toast points. I also made a simple omelet to go with this meal in case the family didn’t like it. It turned out well, though. Everybody enjoyed it.
